Hazel Blomkamp (Author)
The free form of surface embroidery known as crewel or Jacobean embroidery has survived for centuries as a popular craft and art technique, a style of needleworking that is updated and made readily accessible to contemporary embroiderers through this detailed guide. Using a wide selection of materials, the book demonstrates how to let creativity flow into a project through unexpected uses of fabric, threads, beads, and alternative stitches and by borrowing techniques from other forms of needlework. The projects these methods create retain the aspects inherent to crewelwork but utilize unique and exciting designs to reinspire needleworkers or newcomers with an alternative approach that appeals to the modern crafter.

Il Quinto Libro del Punto Antico

Bruna Gubbini
IL QUINTO LIBRO DEL PUNTO ANTICO
San Giovanni in Persiceto (I) 2009, 130 pp., 29.7---21cm, paperback.
Text: Italian, English

The fifth volume in this popular series has just been published. And although they are all about punto antico, each of the 5 volumes is different. As in the other volumes, this book begins with a new and detailed description of some elements. This time they are flowers and leaves in satin stitch combined with bullion knots, motifs which can also be used on their own to decorate a cushion, a bag, or such. Sewn buttons, tassels and variously fine decorations for drawn thread work are also included.
The pattern section with its luxuriously decorated and impressive embroideries follows, once more including many designs for fine tablecloths as well as larger and smaller bags, often with very good illustrations of details of the embroidery. A successful design which appeals at once is a sampler with 28 different motifs for little flowers embroidered on white even-weave linen (15 threads/cm) in various shades of pale blue. It does not look very difficult, but would take a while and require a lot of patience.
The appendix contains the patterns for you to work, drawn on squared paper.
As always in this series, here too the photos are clear and the book is thoroughly attractively presented.

Il Quarto Libro del Punto Antico

Bruna Gubbini
IL QUINTO LIBRO DEL PUNTO ANTICO
San Giovanni in Persiceto (I) 2009, 130 pp., 29.7---21cm, paperback.
Text: Italian, English

This 4th part of the series is intended especially for young persons' homes with modern furnishings. Thus the designs tend to be strictly geometrical, some even minimalist, sometimes not only white on white but combined with pastel colours. For the embroiderer, however, that means less work but nonetheless fine designs, useful items for everyday use. The book begins with a description of the characteristics of Punto Antico embroidery, as it does not assume that the reader has already worked through the 3 preceding volumes.
Very many pattern-suggestions for table linen, cushions, a lampshade, curtains, a bedcover. As in the preceding volumes, here too the designs are perfectly embroidered and illustrated in good photographs. For all the patterns there are diagrams to work from.

Embroidery from the Garden

By Dianne Lampes
From Library Journal
Although Lampe's third volume of embroidery designs (following Embroidered Garden Flowers, Sterling, 1994) was inspired by the flowers of South Africa, the flowers are common to gardens worldwide. Included are 50 patterns not previously published and instructions for arranging the flowers into beautiful gardens. Common embroidery stitches have been carefully chosen to re-create the true form of each flower, with each requiring a meticulous embroidering effort to reproduce. The stitch glossary reviews techniques, standard embroidery thread colors and numbers are referenced throughout, and a flower glossary offers both popular and scientific names for the flowers. Embroiderers will enjoy this lovely blending of photographs of garden flowers and their embroidered reproductions.?JYL

Embroidery Techniques from East and West

Embroidery Techniques from East and West (Paperback)
by Munni Srivastava (Author)
Synopsis
This book provides a wealth of information, practical guidance and inspiration for those embroiderers and quilters who want to extend their repertoire of techniques and bring originality to their work. By combining Indian and Western hand embroidery, free-motion machine embroidery, quilting, beading and found objects, Munni Srivastava produces unique pieces, inspired by a wide range of cultural influences and shaped by her interest in colour and texture. The text combines solid practical guidance with insights into the social and artistic background of Indian textiles. The book is also designed to encourage experimentation and the development of a personal style. Some of the embroidery techniques may already be familiar to embroiderers and, similarly, the patchwork techniques to quilters, but the fascination lies in the fusion of these disciplines and in the exciting and challenging results it produces. Munni Srivastava also gives invaluable advice on the presentation, hanging or framing of embroidered textiles and on their conservation.

Creative Recycling in Embroidery

Creative Recycling in Embroidery (Hardcover)
by Val Holmes (Author)
Consider the term embroidery in its broadest sense. French artist (and author of The Machine Embroiderer's Workbook, 1992, and Encyclopedia of Machine Embroidery, 2003) Val Holmes re-creates the 1970s concept of recycling into a host of techniques and ideas and a handful of projects that experienced stitchers will welcome. It's heavy on the ideas, such as dismantling an embellished garment and reassembling it for a more perfect, uniquely decorated fit; or the use of patchwork in inventing items fabricated out of plastics or metal. It also emphasizes a variety of techniques, many taking advantage of miracle materials like Aquabond (a water-soluble fabric with one sticky side) and crystal strands, synthetic fibers that fuse together when ironed. Full-color photographs of finished recyclables enhance the half-dozen projects--a cushion, makeup bag, concertina book--giving needleworkers inspiration that will last a literal lifetime. She is fascinated by gardens, landscapes and detail and enjoys the challenge of interpreting all the elements she sees in nature. Alison's way of working has evolved into a technique of painting with threads on to a canvas of hand-painted silk. She uses two basic stitches - straight stitch in various combinations and zigzag stitch - to make fine and broad brushstrokes on silk, blending both to achieve stunning results. The raised embroidery on the glowing coloured background produces a beautiful three-dimensional effect. This comprehensive and colourful book covers everything from composing a landscape and setting up the machine to choosing threads and silk dyes and framing up. Alison encourages the reader to experiment with the techniques as they go along, making sure the colour, length and direction of stitch are right for the effect they are trying to recreate. Step-by-step demonstrations of an autumn river bank and colourful flower border are included as are many examples of Alison's inspiring and original work.
