About Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair
Tynn Silk Mohair is a fine blend of mohair, silk and wool with the characteristic soft halo that makes mohair such a popular addition to modern knitting.
The mohair provides warmth, softness and airy volume, while silk adds strength and a subtle lustre. Despite weighing just 25g, each ball contains approximately 212 metres, giving you plenty of flexibility in how you use it.
Perfect as a Second Strand
One of the most popular ways to use Tynn Silk Mohair is as a second strand held together with another yarn.
Pair it with a smooth merino such as Sunday or Double Sunday to add a soft halo, extra warmth and another layer of texture. Matching similar shades creates subtle depth, while combining different colours lets you create entirely new colour effects.
Tynn Silk Mohair can also be paired with heavier yarns. Your finished gauge will be determined by the yarn combination, needle size and pattern, so always follow the pattern tension and knit a swatch before starting.
Knitting Tynn Silk Mohair Held Double
Holding two strands of Tynn Silk Mohair together creates a fuller, more substantial mohair fabric while retaining the yarn's characteristic lightness and halo.
This is a great option for patterns specifically designed for double-stranded mohair and gives you another opportunity to play with colour. Hold two strands of the same shade for a more solid colour, or combine two different shades to create depth and a unique blended effect.
Always follow your pattern for the required needle size and tension when knitting Tynn Silk Mohair held double.
Knitting with a Single Strand
Tynn Silk Mohair can also be knitted on its own as a single strand. The result is an exceptionally light, airy fabric where the soft mohair halo becomes a major part of the finished look.
Changing your needle size and tension allows you to create anything from a delicate, open fabric to something more closely knitted and substantial.
Which Second-Strand Yarn Should I Choose?
Sandnes Garn offers several options when you're looking for a fine yarn to knit alone or hold together with another yarn.
Choose Tynn Silk Mohair for the classic option. Its blend of mohair, silk and wool creates the soft, fluffy halo and added warmth that many knitters associate with a mohair second strand.
Choose Primo Tynn Silk Mohair when you want a premium mohair option. Made from 75% Super Kid Mohair and 25% silk with no added wool, it offers a more luxurious fibre blend while retaining the light, airy character of fine mohair.
Prefer an alternative to mohair? Choose Alpakka Følgetråd. This 100% alpaca follow thread is designed to be used alongside other yarns and is a great option when you want to add the warmth and character of alpaca without the distinctive fluffy halo of mohair.
The right choice comes down to the fabric you want to create: classic mohair halo with Tynn Silk Mohair, a premium mohair and silk blend with Primo, or alpaca with Alpakka Følgetråd.
Care
Tynn Silk Mohair can be machine washed using a gentle wool programme at 30°C. Wash knitted garments separately, reshape after washing and dry flat.
When using Tynn Silk Mohair as a second strand, follow the most delicate care requirements of all yarns used in your finished garment.
Always follow the care instructions on the yarn label.

Published Thursday, 3 September 20265 out of 5Purchased this to make the Novice cardigan - mohair edition by Petite Knits, & its a great option with its mohair, silk, & wool content. Preferable to Rowan lace & a bit more fluffy.

Published Thursday, 20 August 20265 out of 5This is the third garment where I have used Tynn Silk Mohair paired with another yarn. For a fluffy skinny yarn it is very nice to knit, it mostly hitches itself to the yarn it is paired with. The effect is lovely, adding a cuddly softness to the garment and really ramps up the warmth. The colour range is broad and I have used it to both alter and match the other yarns I used. I feel the completed garment is easily worth my money and effort.

Published Saturday, 20 June 20265 out of 5This is one of my 'go to' mohair yarns when double stranding. The wool content adds a light touch of extra robustness, the yarn is delicious and soft and gives me the halo I'm after. Highly recommend
