About Sandnes Garn Duo

Duo is a beautifully balanced blend of 50% merino wool and 50% Pima cotton, designed to create a soft and comfortable yarn that works across the seasons.

The two fibres bring different qualities to the finished fabric. Cotton provides softness without the itch some people experience from pure wool, while merino makes the yarn lighter, more elastic and more insulating than a pure cotton yarn.

The result is a versatile everyday yarn that's particularly useful when neither 100% wool nor 100% cotton feels quite right for your project.

A Great Alternative if You Find Wool Itchy

If you like the warmth and elasticity of wool but find pure wool uncomfortable against your skin, Duo is well worth considering.

Half of the fibre is Pima cotton, which doesn't have the same itchy character some people experience with wool. You still retain the benefits of merino wool, including warmth, elasticity and a lighter finished fabric than you'd generally expect from pure cotton.

This makes Duo particularly appealing for sweaters, cardigans and garments worn close to the skin.

A Year-Round 8ply / DK Yarn

Duo isn't just a winter yarn.

The combination of breathable cotton and insulating merino makes it comfortable across a wider range of temperatures than many traditional wool yarns. It's a great option for transitional-season garments and lightweight layers as well as everyday sweaters and cardigans.

With a standard tension of 22 stitches per 10cm, Duo works beautifully for adult garments, baby and children's knitwear, blankets, vests and accessories.

Sandnes Garn's own pattern collection uses Duo extensively for baby and children's knitting, making it a particularly useful option when you want a soft natural-fibre blend that's comfortable for little ones.

Why Blend Merino Wool with Cotton?

Pure cotton creates a smooth, breathable fabric, but it doesn't have the natural elasticity or insulating properties of wool.

Adding merino wool makes Duo lighter and more elastic while improving warmth and insulation. At the same time, the 50% Pima cotton content softens the overall wool character.

It's a blend where both fibres have a purpose rather than one simply being added as a filler.

Care

Duo can be machine washed using a gentle wool programme. Wash knitted garments separately and use a detergent suitable for wool.

Spin well after washing, reshape and dry flat, preferably on a towel. Sandnes Garn recommends avoiding laundry bags when washing hand-knitted wool garments, as additional friction can encourage felting.
