Meet the New BERNINA L 660 Overlocker

The L 660 is built around a simple idea: an overlocker shouldn't feel difficult to use.

BERNINA has combined straightforward threading with the precision and control experienced sewists expect. You can sew at up to 1,200 stitches per minute when you want to move quickly, then slow the machine right down for detailed work and precise curves.

With 18 stitch variations, adjustable differential feed and a stitch width from 3–9mm, the L 660 can move comfortably between garment sewing, stretch fabrics, fine materials, edge finishing and decorative overlocking.

One-Step BERNINA Air Threader

Threading the loopers is one of the jobs that can make a traditional overlocker feel intimidating. On the L 660, BERNINA has made it considerably easier.

Place the thread at the threading nozzle and use the foot control to activate the One-Step BERNINA Air Threader. Air carries the looper thread through the machine for you, while illumination shows you the operating status.

Because the system is activated with the foot control, both hands remain free to position the thread.

The threading paths are also colour coded, and the new magnetic all-in-one looper cover gives you quick access when preparing the machine.

Built-In Needle Threader

The easier threading doesn't stop with the loopers.

The L 660 also has an integrated needle threader located at the needle area. It switches between the needles, helping take care of another fiddly part of setting up an overlocker.

Together, the air-threaded loopers, built-in needle threader and colour-coded threading paths make changing threads and getting ready for your next project much less daunting.

BERNINA Free Hand System with Feed Dog Drop

If you already sew on a BERNINA, the Free Hand System will feel immediately familiar.

Use the knee lever to raise and lower the presser foot while keeping both hands on your fabric. When the presser foot is raised with the FHS, the feed dog lowers at the same time, creating additional space underneath the foot and making it easier to position or remove your project.

It's particularly useful when you're matching seams, positioning layers or working with a project where you don't want to let go of the fabric every time you need to lift the foot.

Micro Thread Control for a Better Fabric Edge

BERNINA's Micro Thread Control, or mtc, lets you fine-tune the amount of looper thread wrapping around the cut edge of your fabric.

Instead of making several different adjustments to correct an overlock seam that's pulling too tightly or sitting too loosely around the edge, mtc lets you alter the over-edge thread length with one control.

You can even make the adjustment while you're sewing.

This gives you much finer control over how the finished seam sits against different fabrics.

Differential Feed for Knits, Fine Fabrics & Gathering

The L 660 has continuously adjustable differential feed from 0.7 to 2.

Differential feed is particularly important when overlocking stretch fabrics because it helps prevent knit seams from becoming stretched and wavy as they're sewn. At the other end of the spectrum, it can help prevent puckering on fine fabrics.

You can also deliberately adjust the differential feed to create gathering and other effects.

The control is conveniently positioned on the outside of the machine and can be adjusted while you're sewing.

From Stitch-by-Stitch Control to 1,200 Stitches Per Minute

Fast doesn't have to mean difficult to control.

The L 660's DC motor and BERNINA foot control allow you to sew slowly and precisely when you're navigating a curve or detailed section, right through to a maximum speed of 1,200 stitches per minute when you're ready to move.

A speed slider on the front of the machine lets you reduce the maximum sewing speed, which is particularly useful when you're learning, working with a challenging fabric or simply want more control.

The programmable needle stop lets you choose whether the needle stops up or down, while the back-kick function on the foot control can raise or lower the needle.

18 Overlock Stitches

The L 660 gives you 18 stitch variations for construction, finishing and decorative work.

These include 4-thread overlock for strong stretch seams, 3-thread overlock in wide and narrow variations, super-stretch stitching, flatlock, narrow seams, rolled hems, picot stitching and a range of 2-thread stitches.

That gives you options for everything from everyday T-shirts and activewear through to lingerie, children's clothing, fine blouses, home furnishings and decorative projects.

4-Thread Overlock

The classic choice for strong, durable and elastic seams. It's particularly useful for constructing knit garments, sportswear and other projects where the seam needs to stretch with the fabric.

Rolled & Narrow Hems

Create neat, fine edge finishes for lightweight fabrics, ruffles, scarves, blouses and decorative projects.

The L 660 provides particularly fine stitch-length adjustment between 0.8 and 1.5mm, giving you more control when perfecting rolled hems on delicate fabrics.

Flatlock & Decorative Overlocking

Overlocking doesn't have to stay hidden on the inside of a garment.

Flatlock stitches and decorative threads can turn the seam itself into part of your design, opening up possibilities for sportswear, patchwork, decorative clothing and creative textile projects.

Adjustable from Fine Fabrics to Heavier Projects

Presser foot pressure can be adjusted to suit different fabric weights, while the overlock width can be set anywhere from 3–9mm.

The two-step presser foot lift provides extra clearance when you're positioning thicker or multi-layered projects.

The presser foot itself can also swing out to the side, giving you easier access when threading the needles, changing needles or positioning thread underneath the foot.

Knife Control Where You Can Actually Reach It

There are times when you want your overlocker to stitch without trimming the fabric.

On the L 660, the upper knife can be disengaged using a control conveniently positioned on the outside of the machine. There's no need to reach awkwardly inside the machine when you want to change between cutting and non-cutting techniques.

The knife position can also be adjusted to achieve your desired stitch width.

More Room to Work

The L 660 provides 114mm of space to the right of the needle and includes a sturdy Slide-on Table, giving you additional support when handling larger, heavier or less manageable projects.

Despite the useful working area, BERNINA has kept the overall machine relatively compact.

A dimmable sewing light illuminates the work area and can be adjusted to suit your workspace.

Thoughtful Storage & Included Accessories

The L 660 includes an accessory box with an integrated tool insert to keep smaller accessories organised.

There's also a magnetic tool holder directly on the machine, giving you a convenient place for frequently used tools such as your tweezers and scissors while you're sewing.

The included Overlock Foot with Tape Guide #L11 has an open tape guide and can be used across fabrics from fine through to heavy, making it useful when incorporating tape into your overlocked projects.
