About Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt

Peer Gynt has been produced since 1938, making it one of the true classics of the Sandnes Garn range.

Made from 100% Norwegian wool, Peer Gynt has the structure and resilience you'd expect from a traditional wool yarn. It holds its shape well, is naturally durable and resistant to pilling, making it particularly suited to garments that are intended to be worn often and kept for a long time.

Norwegian wool can initially feel more rustic than a fine merino, but that's part of Peer Gynt's character. The fibres soften with wear while retaining the structure that makes the yarn so good for sweaters and other substantial garments.

A Classic Yarn for Sweaters & Colourwork

Peer Gynt has long been associated with traditional Norwegian sweaters, and it's easy to understand why.

Its 22-stitch gauge produces a substantial but relatively lightweight wool fabric, while the resilience of Norwegian wool helps textured stitches and colourwork patterns remain well defined.

Peer Gynt is an excellent choice for sweaters, cardigans, vests, hats, mittens and traditional colourwork. It's equally at home in classic Norwegian knitting and contemporary sweater patterns.

Peer Gynt PetiteKnit Colours

The Peer Gynt range includes colours developed in collaboration with Danish knitwear designer PetiteKnit.

PetiteKnit colours use the same Peer Gynt yarn base, with the same Norwegian wool, meterage and knitting characteristics. They can be used interchangeably and combined with other Peer Gynt colours, giving you an even broader palette to work with.

Peer Gynt vs Smart

Peer Gynt and Smart are both 100% wool yarns that knit to the same standard tension of 22 stitches per 10cm, making Smart a useful alternative for many Peer Gynt patterns when the correct gauge and fabric can be achieved.

The main differences are the feel and fibre treatment.

Peer Gynt is made from 100% Norwegian wool and is non-superwash. It has a more traditional wool feel with excellent structure, resilience and durability.

Smart has a softer, more merino-like feel and is superwash treated, making it a practical alternative when softness and easy care are priorities.

In short: Choose Peer Gynt for the character, structure and durability of traditional Norwegian wool. Choose Smart when you want a softer feel and the convenience of superwash-treated wool.

Always knit a tension swatch before substituting yarns to make sure you achieve both the required gauge and the fabric you want.

Care

Peer Gynt is non-superwash wool but can be machine washed. Sandnes Garn recommends washing garments separately using a gentle wool programme at 30°C.

Wool naturally needs less frequent washing than many other fibres, so airing your garment may be all that's needed between wears.

When washing, spin well, reshape and dry flat, preferably on a towel. Avoid using a laundry bag, as the additional friction can encourage felting.

Always follow the care instructions on the yarn label.
