About Sandnes Garn Tynn Peer Gynt
Introduced in 2022, Tynn Peer Gynt follows in the footsteps of its 8ply big brother, Peer Gynt, which has been a Sandnes Garn favourite since 1938.
Tynn Peer Gynt uses the same 100% Norwegian wool as the original Peer Gynt, simply spun into a finer, lighter yarn. You get the same traditional wool character, resilience and durability in a versatile 4ply weight that's ideal for lighter garments and more detailed knitting.
Norwegian wool holds its shape beautifully, is naturally resistant to pilling and softens with wear. It's a yarn made for garments that aren't just knitted to be worn once or twice, but to be enjoyed for years.
Tynn Peer Gynt vs Sunday vs Tynn Merinoull
All three are excellent Sandnes Garn options when you're looking for a fine 4ply wool yarn, but they create quite different fabrics. The best choice depends on whether you prioritise structure and durability, merino softness, or superwash easy care.
Choose Tynn Peer Gynt when you want the structure, resilience and traditional character of 100% Norwegian wool. At approximately 205m per 50g with a tension of 27 stitches per 10cm, it's particularly good for colourwork, sweaters and garments where shape retention and durability matter.
Choose Sunday when you want a finer and softer 100% merino yarn. Sunday is non-superwash, with approximately 235m per 50g and a tension of 28 stitches per 10cm. It's a versatile choice for lightweight sweaters, cardigans, baby and children's knits, and it works beautifully with Tynn Silk Mohair as a second strand.
Choose Tynn Merinoull when you want the softness of 100% merino with the practicality of superwash treatment. It has approximately 175m per 50g and a tension of 27 stitches per 10cm, making it a slightly more substantial 4ply option and particularly useful for baby and children's garments that need frequent washing.
In short: Tynn Peer Gynt for structure and durability. Sunday for fine, non-superwash merino softness. Tynn Merinoull for soft merino with superwash easy care.
Although all three sit within the 4ply family, their different fibres, meterage and construction mean they won't produce identical fabrics. Always knit a tension swatch before substituting yarns.
Made for Colourwork
The structure of Norwegian wool makes Tynn Peer Gynt an excellent choice for colourwork. It provides clear stitch definition and a traditional wool character that works beautifully for Norwegian motifs, Fair Isle-style colourwork and contemporary patterned sweaters.
The finer 27-stitch gauge also allows you to work more detailed motifs without creating an overly heavy garment, making it particularly useful for intricate colourwork sweaters and cardigans.
A Yarn That Gets Better With Wear
Tynn Peer Gynt isn't intended to feel like a superfine merino. Norwegian wool has a more traditional, structured handle, and that's an important part of what makes the yarn perform so well.
The fibres soften with wear while retaining their natural resilience. Over time, your garment becomes softer and more comfortable while maintaining the structure that helps it hold its shape.
Wool also doesn't need to be washed after every wear. Often, airing your garment is enough to freshen it between washes.
Care
Tynn Peer Gynt is non-superwash but can be machine washed using a gentle wool programme at 30°C.
Wash wool garments separately, spin well after washing, reshape and dry flat. Always follow the care instructions on the yarn label.
